BOOK REVIEW: Knowing the Score by Judy Murray

Title: Knowing the Score; My Family and Our Tennis Story

Author: Judy Murray

Synopsis: What happens when you find you have exceptional children?
Do you panic? Put your head in the sand? Or risk everything and jump in head first?  As mother to tennis champions Jamie and Andy Murray, Scottish National Coach, coach of the Fed Cup, and general all-round can-do woman of wonder, Judy Murray is the ultimate role model for believing in yourself and reaching out to ambition. As a parent, coach, leader, she is an inspiration who has revolutionised British tennis.  From the soggy community courts of Dunblane to the white heat of Centre Court at Wimbledon, Judy Murray’s extraordinary memoir charts the challenges she has faced, from desperate finances and growing pains to entrenched sexism.  We all need a story of ‘yes we can’ to make us believe great things are possible. This is that story.

FCN Founder Review; As a coach living in the UK, the name ‘Judy Murray’ is a house hold name.  We have all watched her son Andy wow the British tennis fans with his accomplishment of winning Wimbledon after a 77 year draught in the men’s game and of course his brother Jamie continuing to win Grand Slams in the doubles game…however, what many don’t now is the impact that Judy herself has had on the British tennis world, and not just as a mother.

Reading Judy’s story and how her career in tennis began long before her boys were born, it was astonishing just how she has transformed first Scottish Tennis and then British tennis.  This is a story about dedication, overcoming a lack of belief and pushing through barriers.  I would recommend this book not only to tennis fans and coaches, but also to female coaches of all sports, and women in general, to show just what can be done when you have a little bit of belief and support from other women along the way.  I would perhaps also recommend this book to the handful of  male coaches and administrators out there who have made life just that little bit more difficult for women in sport, to see just what the world of sport is missing out on when women are excluded.  Congratulations Judy!
