The Importance of Networking
Coaches cannot be coaches on their own, we all need support from those around us. So many demands are put upon coaches nowadays, sometimes the tasks our athletes give us can be overwhelming! We not only have to be confident leaders and mentors to our athletes, but we have to be technicians, strength and conditioning coaches, nutritionists, sports psychologists, a parent, a friend, a councillor … the list goes on. The only way to gain knowledge and support in all of these areas is by creating your own supportive network.
A network is a group of individuals who can help you become the best coach you can be. Whether that’s family, friends, peers, or even just people you admire, your job as a coach is to create a system of support to help you achieve career (and even personal) success.
Networks provide opportunities to develop new and continuing relationships with peers, mentors and potential employers. It has positive effects on both the individuals successes with researchers finding the following benefits of creating your own network:
- enhances individuals reputation
- creates clearer role expectations
- improves task performance
- increases access to career and emotional coping resources
- advances careers.
According to the Journal of Intercollegiate Sport:
“participation in networks is integral for advancement within sports organisations, particularly for women”
Networking for Women
According to the research book: “Coaching Women To Lead”, women use 8 coping strategies to overcome barriers they experience in their careers. Whilst all eight are useful strategies, the strategy that came top of the list was networking.
In their research, it was also identified that networking may also be even more important to women than it is to men. “The pricess of seeking and providing supporting contacts for work purposes is constantly provided as a strategy for overcoming women’s barriers to senior positions. Networks also provide support systems, feedback and the opoprtunity to gain influence.”
