BASKETBALL; Review of Day 1

It was a busy opening day in Women’s basketball today.  There were four games on the go.

The day started out with Turkey vs France.  Coach Valerie Garnier lead  France to win the game 55-39 with Endy Miyem and Sarah Michel leading the charge with 14 points each.  Turkey put up a good fight in the first and third quarters with Nevriye Yilmaz leading them with 16 points.

Next up was China vs Canada.  Coach Lisa Thomadidis lead Canada to a 90-68 win. This game was remarkable in the sense that every single player on team Canada scored contributing to the win.  They were lead by Tamara Tatham with 20.  China put up a great fight in the 2nd, 3rs, and 4th quarters with Nan Chen scoring 13 and Xiaojia Chen scoring 12.

Third was Australia vs Brazil. Australia won the game 84-66 with Elizabeth Cambage leading the charge with 20 points, she also had Penny Taylor who scored 17 and Leilani Mitchell with 18.  Brazil was lead by Iziane Castro with an impressive 25points.

To finish the day we had Belaruse vs Japan. This was the closest game of the day it came right down to the last 30seconds buy Japan came out on top with a final score 77-73. Japan was lead by Mika Kurihara with 20 points.  Belarus put up a great fight lead by Yelena Leuchanka with 16 points but being supported by the whole team with everyone on their team scoring points.

For day one of Group A we saw some great strategic coaching along with some awesome team play with two teams having every player on the team scoring.
