Marieanne Spacey-Cale hails fantastic potential on Southampton appointment (UK)
SAINTS have appointed England coach Marieanne Spacey-Cale MBE as the head of its women’s football programme.
The club’s recent bid to join the Women’s Championship was unsuccessful and Spacey-Cale has come in to get Saints in a position where they will be able to have a women’s side at that level.
She said: “From the moment I walked into the club the excitement has continued to rise.
“Listening to the people, the plans for the future and the potential impact that this club can have on women’s and girls’ football, not just in the region, but in England and beyond, is fantastic.
“This is an opportunity to be part of a project that has got a solid foundation, but like anything, we’ll have to grow and build to become something bigger and better.
“I’m excited for the future of women’s football here.”
Saints say the 52-year-old, who has been working at The FA for the last 11 years, ‘represents the cornerstone of the club’s ongoing commitment to expanding its girls and women’s programme beyond its existing Regional Talent Club set-up, and providing a pathway for talented female players to fulfil their potential at Southampton FC’.
